The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Metso’s updated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, covering both short- and long-term goals.
This recognition, given in December 2025, confirms that aggregates and mineral processing solutions company Metso’s climate targets are aligned with the latest climate science and the ambition to limit global warming to 1.5 °C.
The targets include achieving net zero across the value chain, introducing new customer-related goals and strengthening supplier engagement. This underscores Metso’s leadership in driving industry-wide decarbonisation and innovations for water, energy and resource efficiency, as well as circular solutions.
Claudia Genin, Metso’s chief growth officer, commented: “Metso’s newly validated climate targets extend beyond our own journey; they are designed to empower our customers and suppliers to realise their goals as well. The updated targets are a direct extension of our ‘We go beyond.’ strategy and our commitment to being a sustainability frontrunner in our industry.
“With Scope 1 and 2 emission targets that are among the most ambitious in our sector, we are setting a new standard for climate action. Through the Metso Plus portfolio, we provide solutions that help customers reduce energy and water use, improve circularity, and enhance operational efficiency. By enabling our suppliers to set bold climate targets, we accelerate the transition to a lower carbon value chain.”
Metso says these targets strengthen its sustainability agenda and support the development and sales of the Metso Plus portfolio.
It adds that the commitment to net zero by 2050 underscores Metso’s focus on innovation and partnerships that enable sustainable growth. The new scope 3 and customer engagement targets reflect a shared journey, positioning Metso as the strategic sustainability partner. This opens doors for collaborative R&D and developing products and services that can reduce emissions globally.
Metso will begin reporting progress on these targets externally in Q1 2026. Scope 3 reductions will be reported on an annual basis.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) helps companies set GHG reduction targets aligned with latest climate science. SBTi validation ensures transparency and credibility in corporate climate action. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
