Miller UK has scooped two major prizes at the TDR Training Annual Awards 2012.

The company, which says it is the world’s largest manufacturer of buckets and couplers for companies such as Hitachi, Caterpillar and Volvo, is based at Cramlington, near the city of Newcastle, County Northumberland, north-east England.

Miller UK won Medium-Sized Company of the Year and Young Apprenticeship Engineer of the Year (Cori McArdle, Blyth Community College) in the awards organised by TDR, a training organisation that brings together leading engineering and manufacturing companies in the north-east region.

“These awards are recognition of our continued commitment to training and development, despite difficult trading conditions in the construction sector,” said Chris Parkin, managing director of Miller UK.

“Our workforce are our greatest asset and valuing the people we have is critical to the success of the company. We see apprenticeships as the best channel to bring forward and develop the next generation of employees.”

The company says that having invented the pin grabber quick coupler in 1987, it is now a world leader in the manufacture and servicing of buckets and couplers for the earthmoving industry, offering simple and adaptable solutions that are used by some of the sector’s biggest names.

The company has well-established overseas operations, including a foundry joint venture in China, and is currently expanding its presence in the UK market.

Miller UK was founded in 1978 as a mobile welding and repair service for quarries, mines and open cast coal sites by our current chairman Keith Miller, and today it operates on a global basis.

Medium Sized Company of the Year Award

This award recognises a company that has taken on apprentices over a number of years through good and bad times.

The company has shown commitment to investing in young people and giving them the opportunity to progress.

This year Miller has expanded its apprenticeship programme to include technical, purchasing, IT and logistics trainees as well as shop-floor apprentices.

It says its investment in training will pay dividends in the future with a secure pool of highly skilled and motivated employees.

TDR Young Apprenticeship Engineer of the Year Award 2012

Cori McArdle completed his Young Apprenticeship at Northumberland College and gained PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) units in fabrication, thermal cutting and MIG welding.

During the college programme he demonstrated a commitment to the course, showed keen interest in the engineering sector and made exceptional progess at college.

Cori achieved 2 As and 11 Cs in his GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and now has now embarked on an apprenticeship with Miller UK.
