The Mineral Products Association (MPA) has welcomed the Government’s announcement setting out details of the £5.2 billion pledged for flood defences and increasing resilience.
MPA members will contribute to many parts of this programme, from providing aggregates, foundations and concrete pipes for hard defences to sustainable urban drainage schemes and porous surfaces in the built environment.
Mineral resources, including sand and gravel, are often located on functional flood plains. At the same time, hard rock and other upland quarries result in large voids with the potential to retain huge volumes of water. Therefore, the careful planning, design, management and restoration of quarries can assist by providing space for storage and natural flood relief for communities downstream.
Nigel Jackson, chief executive of MPA, said: “We have often called for more focus on infrastructure delivery, so we are pleased to see the list of projects that the Government is committed to taking forward. Our members and their products are essential for ensuring the built environment is resilient in the future. They can also play a significant role in the enhancement of the natural environment as well.
“Adaptation to climate change is essential now and in the coming decades, even if all countries deliver substantial cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. The mineral products industry will provide the essential materials for this challenge, and the MPA welcomes today’s announcement.”
