Tarmac launches Sustainability Report

868 Tarmac’s 2010/11 Sustainability Report, highlights the progress and performance that the company has made against its Sustainability Framework targets over the past year.

Using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, this is Tarmac’s third such report.

It highlights how, since 2004, Tarmac has reduced specific energy consumption by 15%; cut specific CO2 emissions by 11%; delivered a 92% reduction in waste sent to licensed disposal sites, and is now a net user of waste.

The company says it has also cut Lost Time Injuries by 21% since 2009; has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of its carbon-cutting efforts, and has 100%of its products certified as ‘Very Good’ against BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products.

Dr Martyn Kenny, Tarmac’s director of sustainability, said: “Our new report highlights the progress that we’re making against our commitments and demonstrates that sustainability is even more deeply embedded within our business strategy and culture. The steps we’re taking to further cut carbon and energy use; supply responsibly sourced products; reduce waste, and run an even safer business are delivering tangible benefits to Tarmac and our customers.”

Tarmac’s Sustainability Framework informs the report and guides the company’s business strategy and targets. It focuses on four key areas that are central to Tarmac and its customers: Sustainable Products; Climate Change; Natural Resources and the Environment, and People and Communities.
