The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) has revealed a string of award winners at its annual Legislative & Policy Forum in Washington D.C. (24-27 September).

The Community Relations Excellence Awards recognise aggregate producers for their generous contributions to their communities and their work enhancing public perception of their operations and the entire industry. This year, NSSGA saw another increase in award applications and recognised 10 Gold, 12 Silver and 72 Bronze winners. Vulcan Materials Company’s Chula Vista Stone was the highest-scoring application and thus named the Platinum award winner.

“The Community Relations awards highlight the importance our industry places on being a good neighbour,” said NSSGA President & CEO Michael Johnson. “Building and maintaining strong relationships with the community lays the foundation for our members’ success and growth. I’m honoured to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of today’s winners.”

Additionally, Cemex’s FEC Quarry, Holcim’s Marblehead Quarry and Martin Marietta’s Hatton and Onslow Quarries were recognised as ‘Stars of Excellence’ winners. This award is presented to an operation with multiple Gold Awards in Safety, Community Relations or Environmental Excellence within five years.

The NSSGA has also announced Rep. Nick Langworthy (NY) as the ROCK Star Award winner at the annual NSSGA Legislative & Policy Forum. He was honoured with the award for his work championing aggregate policy issues. He notably led on key aggregates report language within the Farm Bill and is the Republican lead on the Aggregates Caucus.

“During his freshman year in Congress, Rep. Langworthy has established himself as a champion for the aggregates industry and spearheaded policies important to us,” said Michael Johnson, president and CEO of NSSGA. “Thank you to Rep. Langworthy, as well as his staff, for their leadership on these critical policies that will help our industry provide the essential materials needed for our infrastructure across the country.”

Rep. Langworthy authored the important “Rocks on Crops” report language included in the Farm Bill. This language recognises the potential for aggregate materials and quarry by-products to enhance America’s agricultural productivity and sustainability. Rep. Langworthy also serves as the Republican lead for the Congressional Aggregates Caucus. This bipartisan group educates other members of Congress about the important work of the aggregates industry.

The ROCK Star Award is given annually to members of Congress who do extraordinary work for the aggregates industry.
