Atlas Copco’s latest ROC L8RC drill rigs are designed to offer high performance multipurpose drilling for mining and large scale quarrying operations. The new range can be used to accurately drill production blast holes, pre-split holes, buffer holes or dewatering points.

The ROC L8 is available with either a 25 or 30bar high pressure compressor to give efficient in pit grade control or shallow exploration drilling using reverse circulation. But the rigs can also be quickly converted to use down the hole hammer drilling techniques.

As standard the rig stores 36 m of RC drill pipes, including 30m in its revolving magazine, which is usually enough for in-pit grade control through two or more benches. The feed capacity facilitates deeper RC drilling (up to 100m) by the insertion of additional RC pipes into the carousel while drilling.

According to Atlas Copco, in pit grade control with the ROC L8 in RC drilling mode is one of the most efficient ways to reduce dilution in bedded deposits.

When changing from RC drilling to conventional blast hole drilling, the revolving pipe magazine makes it possible to drill blast holes up to 54 mm. The company said that large holes can be completed by loading the magazine with conventional 14mm diameter drill pipes, changing to a conventional 5 or 6″ hammer, adding an air intake adapter to the rotary head and reroute the dust collection hose to the dust collector system, and the rig is ready for drilling blast holes up to 203 mm.
