Police officers recover stolen telehandler using CESAR

Two police officers in Lancashire, UK have been given awards after they successfully identified a stolen telehandler using the CESAR equipment security scheme.

CESAR (Construction & Agricultural Equipment Security and Registration) is the officially sanctioned security scheme for the UK construction and agriculture sectors, which uses identification technology from Datatag.

PC Daniel Haworth and PC Peter Mather, members of the Rossendale’s Rural Taskforce, Lancashire Constabulary, attended a location in Burnley where there had been a large piece of plant machinery left parked overnight.

Through the Rossendale Rural Taskforce’s knowledge of Datatag and the CESAR scheme, officers were able to use their scanning device and quickly identify the Manitou Telehandler as stolen. The vehicle is valued at approximately £40,000, which Datatag says resulted in a very relieved owner upon its discovery.

Peter Wilson of Datatag’s police liaison team presented the CESAR Champion badge award to the officers in July.

“This type of crime impacts communities and business owners significantly. Through the Rural Taskforce teams, Lancashire Constabulary is committed to proactively tackling this problem.” said PC Haworth on receiving the award.

CESAR, powered by Datatag, can be fitted to any construction or agriculture machine that is at risk of theft. The tamper-evident label acts as an initial deterrent and the multiple layers of technology help to identify the machine. All the owner and machine details are stored on the CESAR secure database for police to double-check any machine quickly and easily.
