The major Pacific Highway upgrade in New South Wales is one of the largest road infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia.

Connecting Sydney and Brisbane, the Pacific Highway is being upgraded to provide a four-lane divided road from Hexham to Queensland and is a major contributor to Australia’s economic activity.

Work started in 1996 and is scheduled for completion in 2020, with approximately 75%, some 493km, of the work having already been completed.

The importance of selecting correctly-sized and shaped rock products in the construction of roads has a major impact on the longevity and user acceptance of the road’s surface.

Recently, Lewis Quarry took delivery of a new Powerscreen Warrior 2400 mobile screen to produce three end products, all supplied to the Pacific Highway upgrade.

This large-scale scalper screen is fitted with a metal apron feeder section to accept heavy duty feed materials and a highly aggressive triple-shaft screen box (20′ x 6.3′) with a top deck screen media of 100mm punch-plate and a bottom deck of 40mm mesh.

The screen box is configured at 45º with two weights fitted which gives a steady flow of the feed material across the deck and has an operating speed set at 790rpm.

For the project the -40mm is used for sub road-base while the mid-size material, -100mm to +40mm, is used for drainage rock. The over-sized material, +100 to -300mm, is used for small end gabion rock.

The Warrior range is one of Powerscreen’s flagship equipment series, and ranges in size from the highly compact Warrior 600 with its 8′ x 4′ screenbox and production rate of up to 280tonnes/hour, through to the Warrior 2400 with its regular throughputs of up to 800tonnes/hour.

The first Warrior 2400 was sold into Australia in 2010 and has since been shipped to many satisfied customers across the world.

The Powerscreen Warrior 2400 has been specifically designed for large-scale operators, and its robust design features a heavy-duty incline screen with a high amplitude triple-shaft drive mechanism, making it ideally suited to scalping at the quarry face, large volume screening, two or three-way splitting and stockpiling of a variety of high specification materials.

Family-owned Lewis Quarry is based in New South Wales and has 35 years of experience. It is a major supplier of quality rock products to a number of government agencies, large organisations, small businesses and private individuals.
