When uptime matters most

There are essentially three elements to consider to get the most uptime for your fixed or mobile equipment: parts, people and finding the right service timing. Each of these brings unique challenges to address.

To reach success, quarry owners and contractors need to have the right components and spare parts on-site while keeping inventory costs low. It is important to understand which parts break more often and their typical life span. When something does break, having only some of the needed spares rather than all of them is never enough. However, at the same time, stocking too much can increase carrying costs, so it is important to keep the right or optimal amount on hand.

MO2Smaller parts such as electrical components (fuses, modules, contactors, and sensors) are usually inexpensive, but downtime and lost revenue can result if they are not available. Workers at a site may find a workaround solution when one of these breaks and components are unavailable. This tends to be more of a band-aid solution, and if it happens too often, the accumulation of small workarounds can cause problems.

Beyond parts, what needs to be decided is whether the work should be done in-house by site teams or by service personnel from the OEM. Having OEM technicians do the changes may be a better option in terms of safety as they are often more familiar with these operations. Timing also plays an important part in maintenance, and machines often have set components that need to be changed, at 250, 500 and 1000 hours. These parts need to be readily available at the designated service intervals.

When conducting the 1000-hour service check, OEM service technicians may see other problems or parts that need to be addressed. In many cases, OEM technicians can ensure proper calibration, helping the machine perform as it should, spot parts that are wearing more quickly and make recommendations.

Metso Outotec offers Availability services that can help deliver additional production hours by leveraging parts, people and services. Below are four options.

1. Recommended Parts Lists (RPLs) can determine which parts are needed and modified as conditions and operating usage change.

2. Field Service expertise - It is critical to understand your teams’ capabilities. This includes what they can provide, what training they have, and what problems they can identify and troubleshoot. Finding the mix between your team and OEM support can make the difference for your asset’s uptime.

3. Even though your crushers are operating, it doesn’t mean they are working at their full potential. Bringing lining or chamber experts can extend the life of your wear parts by helping you select the optimal chamber.

4. Metrics remote monitoring and online troubleshooting. Metso Outotec provides data to help make better decisions regarding maintenance, scheduling and needed parts.
