Ten US quarries have been given gold awards for demonstrating their commitment to sustainable environmental practices. Ten US quarries have been given gold awards for demonstrating their commitment to sustainable environmental practices.
The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) gave the awards to the ten quarries as part of its 2018 Environmental Excellence Awards.
The annual awards recognise NSSGA members that actively contribute to the maintenance of the environment in and around their operations as evidenced by a corporate commitment to the exemplary use of environmental controls and systems. The awards are partly based on the extent to which an operation meets and exceeds technical environmental and regulatory requirements. They are not based on aesthetic or beautification criteria.
One of the gold award winners, the Lake Wales Sand Mine, was given a Two Star of Excellence Award which recognises operations that have received gold awards in both environmental and community relations excellence within five years. The CEMEX operation based in Florida previously received a community relations gold award in 2017.
The nine other gold award winners were: 474 Sand Mine (operated by Cemex) Orlando, Fla; Charmian Plant (Specialty Granules) Blue Ridge Summit, Pa; Churchville Quarry (Martin Marietta) Cockeysville, Md; Federal Quarry (Lehigh Hanson) McCook, Ill; Honey Island Sand & Gravel (LafargeHolcim) Pearl River, La; Kremlin Plant (Specialty Granules) Pembine, Wis; Manteno Quarry (Vulcan Construction Materials) Naperville, Ill; Presque Isle Quarry (LafargeHolcim) Presque Isle, Mich; Tilcon Mt. Hope Quarry (CRH Americas Materials) Parsippany, N.J.
Michael Johnson, NSSGA president and CEO, said: “These operations prove that quarries are true assets to their communities.”
The winners will be recognised at the NSSGA’s Legislative & Policy Forum, held on 25-27 September in Washington, D.C.
