Sustainable technology firm Recycl8 has just completed its first large-scale commercial project. This follows last year's successful first industry pour of its sustainable, lower-carbon R8 Mix concrete on a housing foundation.

The Aberdeenshire, Scotland-based company has partnered again with construction materials specialists Breedon Group to supply Recycl8’s patented sustainable R8 Mix concrete solution for installing an industrial floor slab for international energy transition firm Aurora Energy Services.

Breedon supplied the pioneering R8 Mix concrete to civil engineering contractor Nicol of Skene for installation for Aurora’s new Operations and Training HQ in Inverness. The R8 Mix concrete is produced in line with the Breedon balance low carbon concretes range. Having recently secured funding from the Scottish National Investment Bank, Aurora is expanding its network of regional training hubs and workshop facilities to grow the global green energy supply chain.

“We are excited to be working with Aurora Energy Services,” said Mark Gillespie, CEO of Recycl8. “It is particularly gratifying for us to carry out our first large-scale commercial project with an organisation committed to supporting the energy sector’s transition to net zero, focusing on the renewables sector. With our commitment to fostering a sustainable, circular economy future for the construction industry by playing our part in lowering carbon emissions from concrete manufacture, we share the same values and synergies. In fact, our ‘green’ credentials were the deciding factor in Recycl8 being selected for this project.

“Working closely with our partners in the waste-to-energy and construction industries, we have developed R8 Mix, a pioneering, sustainable concrete, which not only has a lower embodied carbon than traditional mixes but also gives new life to materials that would otherwise be discarded. We believe that this is the future of sustainable construction, and we are proud to partner with Aurora Energy Services to put our ambitions into action.”

Doug Duguid, CEO of Aurora Energy Services, added: “Our Operations and Training HQ in Inverness is critical to our plans for driving job and training opportunities in Scotland’s burgeoning renewables sector. Selecting Recycl8 for this project is part of a conscious effort to ensure that companies within the construction supply chain align closely with our values and ommitment to accelerating the energy transition.

“We are genuinely thrilled to be working with Recycl8, an ethically conscious, sustainable business making real progress in tackling the challenge of decarbonisation across the global construction industry.”

Doug Duguid is also a director of Recycl8: he and a group of private investors invested in the company in 2021.
