Emily Broad, in-house geologist at Keynvor Morlift Ltd (KML) in Falmouth, has been named Young Professional of the Year at an industry conference in Portugal.

Broad won the award for her paper entitled ‘Factors affecting Rock Armour Yield in Cornish Granites’ which highlighted the unique benefits of Cornish granite for coastal protection schemes and KML’s close working relationship with Chywoon Quarry near Falmouth, in Cornwall, south-west England.

The unique geology of Chywoon with its large to massive natural block jointing and in-situ block distribution is particularly favourable for armourstone production. The quarry has increased yield through changing many parameters of its blasting pattern in order to utilise natural, in-situ fracturing and jointing sets.

Broad works with their quarry manager to understand variations in fracture patterns and analyse block distribution along different faces to better inform blast designs and deliver increases in the yield of suitable armourstone. She also works closely with KML’s project and marine teams to fulfil armourstone requirements for client projects and coordinate loading operations.

Broad presented her paper at the annual Armourstone Users Group meeting in Porto which brought together leading industry professionals to discuss latest developments about the use of armourstone for coastal defences and breakwaters in the UK and around the world.

KML’s managing director, Diccon Rogers, was delighted by Broad’s win. Commenting from Falmouth Wharves, he said, “We are very proud of Emily’s achievements. Her paper showcased the many benefits of Cornish granite and it was great that she was able promote KML’s work in rock armour and our close working relationship with Chywoon on an international stage.”

He added: “KML’s is proud to be one of the UK’s leading organisations for the supply, delivery and placement of all types and grades of armourstone. Our previous successes include armourstone projects for Hinkley Point C, the Environment Agency and Hastings Council and we are currently exporting high-quality Cornish engineering granite from Falmouth to Brixham where we are working on improvements to Victoria Breakwater for Torbay Development Agency and JT Mackley & Co. “
