The high profile politicians made the pledge to the French construction materials specialist after a recent visit to the company’s Port-La Nouvelle cement plant. The site has reserves estimated at 75 years and produces some 700,000tonnes/year of clinker. The officials noted that although Lafarge has a high-quality environmental policy, the group claims to be subject to unfair competition from foreign competitors which are not required to meet the same regulations in their home countries.
The Port-la-Nouvelle site recently won the ‘Trophée Sécurité’ safety award from the French cement industry union (SFIC) for 2013. The site was selected from nine French cement plants which did not record any work accidents (leading to time off work) during the year. The SFIC award goes to the industrial site which offers the best safety performance over the past three years, with the lowest number of work accidents (leading to time off work or not).
