Taiheiyo Cement has revealed that it is supporting an Indonesian alliance that has begun exporting cement to the US market.
The corporation confirmed that SBI, which is an Indonesian company that it holds an equity stake in, is exporting cement to its US subsidiary CalPortland Cement. The first shipment in June was marked with a ceremony featuring key stakeholders.
“This achievement not only contributes to SBI’s business performance but also secures a stable supply source of over 500,000 tonnes per year for our US operations, further deepening the partnership between the two companies,” Taiheiyo Cement wrote in its release.
“With demand in the U.S. market expected to continue growing, the addition of this new shipping base will further strengthen our group’s extensive network across the Pacific Rim, and we anticipate that this will further enhance our competitiveness in the US market.
“Furthermore, as demand for low-carbon cement has been growing in the US in recent years, we will explore the possibility of manufacturing blended cement to meet local needs in collaboration with SBI, leveraging the company’s advanced manufacturing technology.
“We will continue to strengthen our business foundation in Southeast Asia, whilst contributing to the development of social infrastructure and a circular economy through the supply of cement and other products that meet local needs, with the aim of sustainable growth.”
In 2021, Taiheiyo Cement entered into an agreement with state-owned SIG and its group company, SBI, with the ambition of establishing a foundation in Indonesia and eventually exporting to the US. Following significant investment, including the construction of a loading jetty and silos at SBI’s Tuban plant, the US exports are underway.
The US export announcement comes after CalPortland Cement confirmed it had acquired key operational assets from Vulcan Materials.
