Tarmac and Sellafield have marked a major milestone in their partnership through the operation of an on-site batching plant.
Concrete is used to construct facilities for the treatment and storage of waste, which is removed from Sellafield’s ponds and silos in West Cumbria. To support this, Tarmac operates an on-site concrete batching plant equipped with new laboratories.
The on-site batching plant means Sellafield does not have to source concrete from multiple producers, reducing transport costs, carbon emissions, and traffic congestion while enabling large-scale production. The plant also uses rainwater and site-generated greywater in the concrete production process to reduce its reliance on freshwater resources.
The batching plant was a collaborative project between multiple organisations, including OneAim, Tarmac, Total Batching Solutions, Sellafield, and others. Together, the organisations helped with the plant’s construction, commissioning, and transition to the new concrete supplier.
Sellafield’s head of the programme and project partners, Duncan Elliot, said the batching plant marked a major milestone for the two companies as it was the first project delivered through the partnership.
“This is the first major project to be completed by our partnership and will bring significant benefits to support major infrastructure delivery and hazard reduction at Sellafield,” he said.
“There’s been a fantastic team effort from everyone involved. The plant has been four years in the making and Sellafield now has a world-class facility.
“Thank you to everyone involved in achieving this huge success.”
