Tarmac has donated £25,000 towards the upkeep of one of two emergency Land Rover vehicles used by North East Wales Search & Rescue (NEWSAR). The donation follows NEWSAR’s continued help in the development of Tarmac’s emergency quarry evacuation plans at Hendre quarry and for providing talks to children about the dangers of swimming in quarries and deep water uninvited and unsupervised. NEWSAR, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, received 90 emergency callouts and gave 30 talks on safety

NEWSAR, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, received 90 emergency callouts and gave 30 talks on safety at quarries to organisations across the region last year.

The volunteer-led organisation operates across North East Wales and covers Flintshire, Denbighshire, Conwy, Wrexham and Powys, and regularly assists Mountain Rescue teams in North Wales as well as Lowland Search and Rescue teams in Cheshire and Shropshire.

Gill Brailsford, NEWSAR’s Fundraising Officer, said: “We’re delighted with Tarmac’s donation towards the running costs of one of our fleet of Land Rovers emergency vehicles. Without the support of companies such as Tarmac, we simply could not reach those most in need.”

Rob Maurice-Jones, Tarmac North Wales quarry manager, added: “We are really pleased that we have been able to support NEWSAR. The work the volunteers do is of the utmost importance and we appreciate everything they do to keep the people of North Wales safe.

“We work closely with NEWSAR to carry out joint visits to local schools and groups in the area to give talks on the dangers of playing in quarries and deep water, and we hope our donation towards the running costs and upkeep of this vehicle will help them continue the vital work they do in our community.”
