Information gathered on a mammoth tooth, along with cannon balls, cutlery and a ship’s timber, helped Erith Wharf on the Thames win ‘Best Attitude by a Wharf’. The tooth has been identified as being from a young mammoth deposited in the sea during a time when this area was dry land. This find is of particular importance as it can help build a picture of the prehistoric landscape around the coast of Britain.
Ridham Wharf near Sittingbourne in Kent won ‘Best Find’ for the discovery of nine pieces of late 18th Century silver tableware. From the crest on a goblet bowl, specialists were able to identify it as belonging to the sixth Earl of Stair, John Dalrymple (1749-1821).
