Tarmac has announced that its UK operation has gained the Achilles Building Confidence accreditation for its safety, health and environmental policies. The company is believed to be the first in the quarrying and construction materials business to achieve this standard.
Certification provides external verification of the strength of Tarmac’s quality management systems and the company’s commitment to providing greater supply chain transparency. The company was also the first in its sector to become a member of the Building Confidence governing council.
Tarmac has asked its key suppliers to also gain the Building Confidence accreditation to support its drive to raise industry standards and reduce supply chain risk. Suppliers including Nynas, Hydrex and Go Plant have recently secured the accreditation and Tarmac has said a further 50 companies are currently taking steps to achieve the award.
Tarmac executive director of procurement Adrian Cook said, “Until now, a lack of independent accreditation has meant that the construction industry has had to rely too much on anecdotal information from sales teams telling them how good their health and safety, environmental and CSR track record is. Consequently, the standards and policies that some companies claim to have may not always stack up when placed under scrutiny. Building Confidence provides third party auditing of claims and a greater assurance to buyers and suppliers that the supply chain is responsible, competent and legally compliant.”
