Tarmac has launched CEVO Asphalts, engineered solutions that enable the delivery of Net Zero roads by combining advanced binder technology, circular economy principles, and low-energy manufacturing with wider decarbonisation measures.

The UK building materials major says for the first time, highway authorities and contractors can “specify a toolkit of proven, practical solutions that, together, make it possible to achieve Net Zero road construction and maintenance – without relying on carbon offsetting”.

At the core of this approach is CEVO Asphalts, which reduces carbon emissions from the asphalt materials themselves by a claimed up to 45% compared with traditional hot mix asphalts.

Tarmac says these savings are achieved through the use of advanced bio binders, warm mix technologies and higher levels of recycled asphalt planings (RAP). Bio binders, made from renewable plant-based alternatives to petroleum-derived bitumen, not only lower embodied carbon but can also trap and store CO₂ within the asphalt matrix. Producing asphalt at lower temperatures through warm mix technology reduces energy use and emissions during both manufacturing and laying, while incorporating more RAP minimises the demand for virgin aggregates and bitumen, conserving natural resources.

When deployed alongside other decarbonisation measures, such as the use of electric vehicles and plant, CEVO Asphalts have already helped deliver carbon reductions of a claimed up to 80% on major highway projects. The UK’s lowest-carbon resurfacing trial on the A64 in North Yorkshire has already demonstrated the practical potential of these innovations to deliver a genuine Net Zero road.

Tarmac’s PAVE Technology Solutions further strengthen this approach by incorporating innovations in pavement design and production processes to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon, and deliver performance longevity. Through smooth ride/planning, echelon paving, and automation, PAVE enhances construction quality and durability, reducing whole-life maintenance needs while supporting more sustainable road networks.

Denis O’Callaghan, Business Performance Director at Tarmac, said: “The construction and maintenance of roads make a substantial contribution to the built environment’s carbon footprint.

“With increasing pressure on local authorities and highways contractors to address this challenge, the demand for credible, low-carbon solutions has never been more urgent. We’re proud to be leading the charge with CEVO Asphalts, which is designed to help clients meet their Net Zero goals, without offsetting or compromising performance or durability.”

To help clients better plan and measure their impact, Tarmac will soon launch a digital carbon calculator, giving customers the ability to quantify carbon savings and access clear, project-level footprints.
