Tarmac, one of the UK's largest construction materials companies and a major ready mixed concrete producer, has pledged its commitment to sustainability by becoming a founder signatory to the revised Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy.
Tarmac, one of the UK’s largest construction materials companies and a major ready mixed concrete producer, has pledged its commitment to sustainability by becoming a founder signatory to the revised Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy.
The strategy is led by the Sustainable Concrete Forum (SCF), a consortium of producers and trade bodies from across the concrete sector, and was first developed in 2008.
The new strategy comprises six commitments that help the industry contribute to the delivery of a zero-carbon built environment though monitoring and providing transparent whole-life data, sharing best practice, low carbon transport, monitoring water usage, targeting continuous improvement in Sustainable Production performance and reporting performance annually.
Dr Martyn Kenny, Director of Sustainability at Tarmac, says: “The concrete sector has made great progress in measuring, managing and reducing its impact, while enhancing its contribution to creating a sustainable and zero-carbon built environment. We recognise that we need to continue this important work and the new Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy provides an effective way to lead the construction sector and drive further progress.”
This commitment comes on the back of Tarmac securing the Carbon Trust Standard across its whole business, having 100% of its products certified as responsibly sourced, and receiving the industry’s first five-star rating from Achilles BuildingConfidence for effective supply chain management.
Tarmac also offer the Carbon Footprint Calculator, enabling it to provide customers specific carbon footprint quotes for any product delivered from any UK site.
In 2011, it also launched its new concrete calculator app, which allows customers to make quick and accurate calculations onsite, reducing waste and improving site efficiency.
A 15% cut in specific energy consumption in 2011 against the 2004 baseline has also been delivered.
