Tarmac, a leading UK-based sustainable building materials and construction solutions company, has starred in a new programme created by ITN productions to promote road safety in the construction industry.

‘Masterminds of Construction’ is introduced by newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky and forms the latest part of the company’s ongoing partnership with the Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS) initiative.

Developed in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), Tarmac featured alongside fellow CLOCS supporters property developer Land Securities and international consultancy and construction company Mace. The companies teamed up to demonstrate the crucial safety measures that are being implemented across the construction industry to protect vulnerable pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users.

Sean McGrae, senior manager, national transport at Tarmac, said: “As an operator of one of the largest vehicle fleets in the industry, we are committed to improving vulnerable road user safety across the UK and delighted to be involved in this initiative. At Tarmac we believe that there is both a real challenge and a clear opportunity to improve the safety of cyclists and pedestrians in London and beyond.

“Through our work with CLOCS, ensuring the provision of the right technology and equipment, as well as enabling drivers to have access to the right training and technical support; we are looking to continue our industry-leading approach.”

The programme highlights the ways leading construction clients, contractors and fleet operators are fulfilling the responsibilities in accordance with CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations through training and the use of innovations to reduce accidents between large vehicles and vulnerable road users.

Tarmac was the first company in the UK to trial the Econic concrete mixer which features in the film. The latest HGVs are now able to make left turns with full visibility to all road users by using the leading-edge technology: vehicles have been designed with larger windows, sensors, alarms, side bar mirrors and cameras to offer an improved experience for drivers and a much safer experience for vulnerable cyclists or pedestrians.
