Tarmac has launched its 2011/12 Sustainability Report, highlighting “the significant progress that the business is making against its Sustainability Framework commitments and targets.”

Developed in line with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, this is Tarmac’s fourth such report.

The report says that in the last year, the company has achieved a 12% reduction in specific CO2 emissions since 2004; 100% of products independently certified as responsibly sourced; 95% reduction in waste to licensed disposal since 2004; 15% reduction in specific energy consumption since 2004; 33% reduction in potable water used per unit of concrete and mortar production since 2004, and Biodiversity Action Plans at all active quarries

The company says it has also cut Lost Time Injuries (LTI) by 31% since 2010, restored 1,971 hectares of land and become the first in its sector to achieve the top five-star rating under the new Achilles BuildingConfidence rating scheme. During 2011, Tarmac also successfully introduced a comprehensive product Carbon Footprint Calculator, enabling it to offer customers a carbon quote for any product from any of its UK sites.

Dr Martyn Kenny, Tarmac’s director of sustainability, said: “Sustainability continues to sit at the heart of Tarmac’s strategy: it guides our actions and is a commercial cornerstone. Our latest report shows that our robust approach is helping us to make significant strides and ongoing progress against the targets in our Sustainability Framework.

“We remain committed to delivering meaningful and transparent improvement in our sustainability and business performance and, through this, deliver direct benefits to customers, communities and other stakeholders.”

Tarmac’s Sustainability Framework informs the company’s report and its overall approach to sustainability. It focuses on four key areas that are central to Tarmac and its customers: sustainable products; climate change; natural resources and the environment, and people and communities.

The company’s previous Sustainability Reports have been ‘A’ Rated by the GRI and the 2011/12 Sustainability Report has once again been submitted for independent review by GRI assessors.
