Getting new equipment to the quarry site can always be a logistical challenge and often involves final assembly of equipment on site. But one recent delivery of a new crushing and screening plant to a quarry in the South American jungle brought an even larger range of challenges.

Powerscreen dealer SEMC Hardware’s customer wanted a new mobile three stage crushing and screening plant for its latest quarry in the former Dutch colony of Suriname, near Brazil. The new tracked system of three crushers and four screens had to be delivered by barge to the site some 85km from the capital of Paramaribo.

The Dutch customer is a civil engineering contractor which establishing the quarry to serve its projects in the region. The Pegson XA400S was to be located at a new quarry which is on a mountain in the jungle, while the main processing plant will be located on a quay at the side of the Suriname River.

The main plant consists of a Warrior 1800, which will be used to create oversize rock for sea defence dykes, while the undersize from the Warrior, as well as any material not used for sea defences, will be processed through the large aggregate plant. This part of the plant consists of a Pegson 1300 Maxtrak and Chieftain 2400 to remove the dust from the feed to the tertiary crusher. The over 5mm product from the Chieftain 2400 is fed directly to a Pegson XV350 to ensure that all the aggregate produced will be cubical. According to Powerscreen, this makes it ideal for the production of high strength concrete and wearing course asphalt.

The Pegson XV350 will operate in closed circuit with an H6203R which uses the triple deck horizontal for high screening efficiency. Two product sizes will be made from the H6203R before the final sizes are produced on the Chieftain 1700.

Powerscreen has said that it won the contract for the equipment over a number of Chinese manufacturers due to its ability to deliver the machines quickly, despite the transport challenges. The company said that it shipped all the equipment to the docks within six weeks of receiving the order. From there, the crushing and screening plants were transported by barge along the river.
