Tillicoultry Quarries, one of the UK’s leading family-owned suppliers of aggregates and construction materials, has acquired Middleton Aggregates, a well-established sand and gravel business based in East Anglia, through a share purchase agreement.

Founded in 1986 by John Lemon and his sons, David and Peter Lemon, Middleton Aggregates operates four sites across East Anglia, supplying high-quality sand and gravel, clay and recycling activities to the regional construction market. The acquisition includes all four operational sites and secures valuable sand and gravel reserves, creating vertical integration for Tillicoultry Quarries in their regional operations.

This move marks another important milestone for Tillicoultry Quarries as it continues to invest in its long-term growth and reserves and strengthen its position as a trusted supplier of construction materials across the UK. With the addition of Middleton Aggregates’ sites, the business enhances its geographic footprint and expands its product capabilities, ensuring quality and service for customers.

Tillicoultry Quarries and Middleton Aggregates are both well-respected, family-owned businesses with shared values of quality, integrity, and a strong commitment to customer service. The deal sees all 46 employees of Middleton Aggregates join the Tillicoultry Quarries team, bringing total staff numbers to over 400 across the wider group.

Wallace Menzies, Managing Director of Tillicoultry Quarries, commented: “Middleton Aggregates is a business I have long admired, and I’ve known Peter and the team for many years. I’m pleased that they’ve trusted us to carry the business forward. Their reputation in the region is outstanding, and the acquisition provides a great opportunity to combine our strengths. We look forward to working with the existing team to maximise the potential of both businesses and continue delivering the quality and service customers expect.”

Peter Lemon, Managing Director of Middleton Aggregates, added: “This marks an exciting new chapter for Middleton Aggregates. We are proud of the business we have built, and I am confident that in joining forces with Tillicoultry Quarries, who share our values and vision, we are securing a strong future for our employees, customers, and suppliers. It will very much be business as usual, with enhanced opportunities ahead.”

Tillicoultry Quarries was supported on the deal by Burness Paull, Shepherd & Wedderburn and Grant Thornton.
