Leading names in the UK quarrying sector have come together to add support to the Institute of Quarrying centenary ‘Quarry Garden’ project. The garden will be revealed to the public for the first time on Wednesday 7th June 2017, when RHS Chatsworth Flower Show opens its doors.

Quarry operators getting behind the garden include Tarmac, Hanson UK, CEMEX UK and Aggregate Industries. The University of Derby Centre for Mineral Products is also pledging its support for the project along with donations from Bath and Portland Stone, Birchover Stone Ltd, Bradstone and The Delabole Slate Company.

James Thorne, chief executive, Institute of Quarrying, said: “This is a farsighted project that is taking quarrying from behind fences and secure sites and putting it front and centre in a very public way. The support we’re receiving from across the sector is hugely satisfying.

“We see this project as a conversation starter. The Quarry Garden is a great forum from which to showcase how far we have come as an industry, particularly in terms of our responsibility to our local communities and the environment. Even during the gestation of the garden, we have unearthed a myriad of positive communications opportunities around community engagement, sustainability and nature.

“We’ve got some hugely positive messages to share and we see the Quarry Garden at RHS Chatsworth as a catalyst for changing perceptions for the good.”

RHS Chatsworth runs from 7th-11th June.
