USG Corporation has expanded its North American manufacturing network by opening a new wallboard manufacturing plant in Wheatland County, Alberta, through its Canadian division, CGC Inc.
The $CAD210 million facility adds wallboard production capacity in Western Canada and is one of the company’s largest investments in the country. Situated on a 214-acre site, the plant will manufacture Sheetrock brand wallboard for use in residential, commercial and infrastructure projects across North America.
“As one of the most significant wallboard manufacturing investments in our company’s history, Wheatland represents a major milestone for our business and a significant commitment to the future of manufacturing and construction in North America,” USG Corporation president and chief executive officer Chris Macey said.
“The new facility strengthens our manufacturing network, adds critical capacity in Western markets and improves our ability to deliver the quality, reliability and performance our customers expect.”
The opening follows the facility’s groundbreaking in 2024 and forms part of USG’s strategy to modernise its manufacturing network and expand production capacity. Together with the revitalisation of the Little Narrows gypsum quarry in Nova Scotia, the company is investing nearly $CAD325 million through CGC to strengthen supply, expand manufacturing capacity and improve service across its North American network. The Little Narrows project is also expected to increase gypsum supply along the Eastern Seaboard.
CGC Inc president Steve Youngblut said the company was thrilled to open its new facility in Wheatland County.
“This modern, sustainable manufacturing hub will help ensure builders have access to the materials they need to build the homes and infrastructure Canada depends on, while supporting long-term jobs and economic growth in the region,” he said
USG chairman Dr. Uwe Knotzer said the opening reflected the company’s commitment to its North American customers.
“This facility is an important addition to our global manufacturing network and a strong example of how we invest for the long term in the markets, customers and communities we serve,” Knotzer said.
