The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that 476 million tonnes of construction aggregates were produced and shipped for consumption in Q1 2022, up 4.1% compared with the same quarter of 2021.

First-quarter American aggregate production increased in four of the nine USGS-measured geographic divisions. Aggregate production was also up in 25 of the 42 states that were estimated.

The USGS says the five leading aggregate-producing U.S. states were, in volume order, Texas, California, Florida, Missouri, and Arizona. Their combined total production was 169 million tonnes, up 10.5% compared to Q1 2021.

Within construction aggregates, an estimated 291 million tonnes of crushed stone were produced and shipped for consumption in Q1 2022 – a 3.5% rise compared to the previous first quarter.

First-quarter 2022 crushed stone output increased in five of the nine geographic divisions USGS measures compared to Q1 2021. Production was up in 29 of the 45 states where USGS made estimates.

The five leading crushed stone-producing states were Texas, Florida, Missouri, Georgia and Pennsylvania. The quintet’s total combined production for consumption was 111 million tonnes, a 6.6% increase from the first quarter of 2021.

Q1 2022 sand and gravel production reached an estimated 185 million tonnes, up 5.2% compared to the same period of 2021.

Sand and gravel production in the first quarter of this year increased in five of the nine geographic divisions measured by the USGS. The USGS says production increased in 27 of the 45 states where estimates were made.

The top five sand and gravel-producing states in Q1 2022 were California, Texas, Arizona, Utah and Washington. Their total first-quarter production stood at 76.9 million tonnes, up 8.1% compared to Q1 2021.

USGS crushed stone, sand and gravel estimates are produced from data reported to the agency through its quarterly sample survey of U.S. aggregate producers.
