The World Cement Association (WCA) has appointed Bernard Mathieu as its climate programme director.

Mathieu will lead the WCA CEOs’ Global Forum on Climate Change that aims to draft the Association’s Roadmap on Climate Change. The forum will take place in Paris, France on 27-28 June 2018.

Mathieu has 22 years of experience in the cement, concrete and aggregate business, holding a range of roles related to sustainability, most recently at LafargeHolcim where he was head of sustainable development. Before that, Mathieu was HeidelbergCement’s head of global environmental sustainability, and has also represented the cement industry on climate issues at the conferences of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

“Bernard represents a fantastic appointment for us at the WCA. He is a highly respected figure in the industry and his experience and insight will be invaluable as we work to develop a roadmap on climate change and prepare for the WCA GFCC,” said Norman Greig, secretary general of the World Cement Association.

“I am delighted to be supporting the WCA’s efforts to promote climate change values in the global cement industry and finding new ways for sustainable businesses to tackle some of the planet’s biggest issues,” said Mathieu. “The collaborative approach advocated by the WCA is really important if we are to succeed in these goals, and I look forward to sharing ideas with representatives from other organisations and associations in the run-up to the WCA GFCC.”

The WCA Global Forum on Climate Change will bring together CEOs and leaders of the association’s member companies as well as external stakeholders to address the environmental challenges the cement industry faces.

The Climate Programme forms part of WCA’s wider World Cement Association Sustainability Effort (WCASE), in which it works with members and other sector organisations and associations to share best practice and collaboratively raise standards on sustainability across the global industry.
