Cemex commemorated World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024by engaging with its drivers and local communities through the company’s Zero4Life Today for Drivers and Vulnerable Road Users programmes.

The Zero4Life Today for Drivers’ programme was launched in 2023 and is now being rolled out across the EMEA region as part of Cemex’s wider injury and incident prevent strategy. The Zero4Life Today for Drivers’programme aims to reach over 7,000 drivers and haulers in the region by the end of 2024.  Focussing on open conversations, Cemex will be reminding drivers about potential risks to themselves, other road users and members of the community.

Alongside the programme, Cemex’s Vulnerable Road Users programme has produced a successful ongoing campaign with 4000 vulnerable road users reached in EMEA through community programmes across 2023. Local Cemex teams have visited schools and various community events within the region, reaching out to pedestrians, cyclists, and members of the public regarding education and best practices for safer road use.

Robert House, EMEA H&S director, Cemex, said: “World Day for Safety and Health at Work gives us a prime opportunity to fly the flag for our important Zero4Life goal and extend safety into the local communities in which we operate. The overall safety and well-being of our people, as well as those we interact with, are paramount and vital to our ability to effectively conduct a world-class business operation. I’m extremely proud of the work our region has done to keep people in our communities safe, and we plan to continue with these engagement activities.

Our initiatives and campaigns are intended to support a workplace where people are safe and healthy.  We strive to foster an environment where employees, contractors and stakeholders are encouraged to discuss improvement opportunities and how they can best be achieved, together with developing a culture where people genuinely care for themselves and each other. Programmes are continually monitored to ensure they are working as effectively as possible.”

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy work practices. A national occupational safety and health culture is one in which the right to a safe and healthy working environment is respected at all levels, where governments, employers and workers actively participate in securing a safe and healthy working environment through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties, and where the highest priority is accorded to the principle of prevention.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work was held on 28 April and has been observed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) since 2003.
