Production improvements of around 30% are possible using 460 Sandvik's new Hurricane VSI rotor, which can be retrofitted on any VSI crusher, said the company. It claims the autogenous design is a major breakthrough in VSI design, with patents pending on four rotor and wear parts.

"One of the main advantages of the new design is the reduced vibration levels within the crusher," said Sandvik Mining and Construction market and offering manager Gareth Orritt. The weight of the unit is also 25% lower than other available rotors, which Orritt said helped reduce the need for maintenance.

The design is based on Sandvik's VSI rotor design introduced in 2002 and which uses a rock lining to accelerate material and improve crushing capacity.

Field testing of the new rotor design showed that it could help to increase throughput by up to 30% for the same power draw. The system also contains fewer wear parts which helps reduce the need for maintenance.
