868 Tarmac’s National Contracting division, one of the UK’s largest maintenance and highways services companies, has secured the prestigious Investors in People (IiP) Gold Award across its whole business.

Tarmac received the award across all of its 19 UK contracting operations in recognition of its approach to people development and the way it has communicated to its 1,100 employees, on how they can individually support Tarmac’s business strategy and ongoing success.

Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac National Contracting & Middle East said: “I am extremely proud that we have secured IiP Gold status. It is a real recognition of the quality of our people and of the hard work that our whole team has put in to embed high standards and clear communications across the business. For us, this means that whether you work in a construction team or are an office-based manager, every employee understands the importance of their job, and how they help us deliver our business goals and meet our customers’ requirements.

“I believe that in achieving IiP Gold, we are helping to raise the bar for people development in our industry. It shows to customers that we are 100% committed to ensuring that our employees are skilled, well-informed and professional. Moreover, it helps us demonstrate the modern face of our business to young people and show that we are a progressive, evolving sector that can provide long-term career opportunities.”

Peter Taylor, Investors in People, managing assessor, said: “Against a challenging economic backdrop, the company is demonstrating how, with a focus on effective and innovative internal communications, it is possible for everyone in a business to understand how they contribute to commercial success.”

Tarmac National Contracting has worked with IiP for the last eight years and first gained national accreditation of the IiP standard in 2009 having previously received accreditation at a number of individual sites.

In securing the gold standard, Tarmac National Contracting assembled an internal accredited team of assessors from its Continuous Improvement team to drive, monitor and embed best practice across the business through day-to-day delivery. This team will continue to work with the business to ensure that it continues to maintain and build upon its achievements to date.
