The UK-based 2904 Institute of Quarrying (IQ) Academy’s latest addition to its growing portfolio of sector specific professional development is a new health and safety qualification.

The IQ Academy Level 3 Certificate in Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness for the Extractives and Mineral Processing Industries is targeted at upcoming managers and supervisors looking to develop their knowledge before progressing to a leadership role.

Julian Smallshaw, head of educational development, IQ, said: “The IQ’s role is to identify opportunities to equip people working within the quarrying and mineral extractives sector with the most up-to-date and relevant, fit for purpose training in the industry.

“That’s also about delivering learning at a place and time tailored to the needs of individuals. We use online learning modules, as well as face-to-face tutorials, which gives you the flexibility to learn around your day job.

“This new Level 3 NVQ qualification will provide extensive knowledge of the core elements in safety, health and environmental processes and procedures. It also covers key areas such as leadership and communication techniques.”

The qualification covers a number of essential safety, health and environmental topics in order to prepare learners for their future management role. It has been mapped to the Level 4 Safety, Health and Environmental Management (SHE) qualification that is already well established in the industry. A significant amount of the knowledge content from the Level 4 is covered in the new Level 3 Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Awareness, thus giving learners the knowledge of essential SHE topics and bridging the gap between operator and management roles.

The Level 3 Certificate in Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness for the extractives and mineral processing industries is open to all, with no prior learning requirements. The course will assist learners in preparing for progression onto the Level 4 SHE qualification.
